Bridge to Crafts Careers

Introducing Students to Careers in History and Historic Preservation

Woodlawn Conservancy serves as an “Outdoor Learning Lab” providing educational opportunities for students of all ages.  Our Bridge to Crafts Careers Workforce Initiative – developed to teach masonry restoration – has grown to include the restoration and care of landscapes. Graduate students from Historic Preservation Programs, Undergrads studying GIS systems, High School Interns from Career Technical Education (CTE) Schools learning about historic preservation, construction, and the potential of “Green Careers” have executed projects or completed internships. As young stewards of Woodlawn, they have been able to gain the experience that qualifies them for jobs and helps them reach their personal goals.

Preservation Training Program

Woodlawn’s Preservation Training Program offers career and workforce development for students in our community. For ten weeks, interns selected for the Preservation Training Program will learn how to care for monuments and buildings made of marble, granite, and limestone. The mission of the program is to prepare participants for entry-level positions in the masonry trade.

Landscape Restoration Program

The Landscape Restoration Training Program consists of a 10 week course for 20 interns selected by the Woodlawn Cemetery. The goal of this program is to train disconnected young people in the best practices in Landscaping and Arborcare, planting plants, and historic landscape preservation through a hands-on training program led by The Davey Tree Expert Company and provide them with life-skills necessary to obtain jobs in the field of green careers upon completion of the program.
